On this day in 1648. Charles I attempted to escape from Carisbrooke Castle. With Harry Firebrace and Sir Edward Worsley waiting with horses to take him to safety just outside the castle walls. Battle of Britain History Walk – Isle of Wight Walking Festival

We’re excited to be teaming up with the Isle of Wight Walking Festival this autumn to bring you a very special guided walk across St Boniface Down – the highest point on the Island and a place steeped in history.

Join Jo and Steve on Sunday 5th October, 11:00 – 12:30, for a fascinating walk that uncovers the many layers of the Down’s past. From the Battle of Bonchurch, to the vital role of RAF Ventnor during the Battle of Britain, through to Cold War defences, plane crashes, and even local UFO sightings – St Boniface Down has seen it all.

This is not just a walk, but a journey through centuries of defence, resilience, and mystery, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Island’s coastline.

Thank You for Joining Us – Battle of Britain: 85 Years On

After a long setup and many weeks of preparation, we are absolutely overjoyed with the response to our Battle of Britain exhibition on the August Bank Holiday Monday. The turnout was incredible - so many people came through the doors, not only to view the displays but to stop, chat, and ask thoughtful questions about the Isle of Wight’s role during this pivotal moment in history.

It means a great deal to us at Restore the Story to see such enthusiasm for preserving and sharing our island’s heritage. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who visited, purchased our booklets, and helped support our work. An extra special thanks goes to those who kindly loaned us treasured items, allowing us to showcase personal stories and artefacts that made the exhibition so meaningful.

We’d also like to give a big thank you to Archie and everyone at the White Lion pub in Niton for providing us with the space to bring this exhibition to life. This project has been a true community effort, and we couldn’t have done it without you.
