Culver Down Historic Defences Guided Walking Tour

Join experienced historians and professional guides from Restore The Story CIC for an engaging guided walking tour across one of the Isle of Wight’s most historically important coastal landmarks.

During this approximately 90-minute tour, you’ll uncover the remarkable story of Culver Down’s changing role in the defence of the Island, from the construction of Henry VIII’s castle through to the major developments of the Palmerston Forts in the 19th century.

Explore how Culver Down became a key defensive position protecting Sandown Bay, learn about its strategic importance during the Second World War, and discover how coastal artillery continued to play a role until the closure of Britain’s coastal defence system in 1957.

Along the route, you’ll hear fascinating stories from the past, including the curious tale of the Hermit of Culver, and discover how this once heavily defended landscape has transformed into the peaceful and scenic location enjoyed by visitors today.
