Description

Experience Steynewood High Angle Battery after dark on this special one-off evening tour.

For our final Steynewood tour of the year, we are doing things a little differently. Rather than visiting during daylight, this special evening tour will take place by torchlight, with some additional lighting and a few extra stories to add to the atmosphere of this remarkable Victorian fortification.

The tour itself remains very much the Steynewood experience you know and love. You will explore the underground magazines, discover the fascinating story of the Battery and its role in the defence of the Solent, see the famous Thornycroft Testing Tank, and hear about the people and events connected with the site.

However, seeing the Battery in the evening gives the site a very different feel. The fading daylight, underground spaces and torchlight make this a particularly atmospheric way to experience one of the Isle of Wight’s most unusual military sites.

There will be a few additional stories and details along the way, including some of the stranger and more unusual aspects of the site’s history, but this is not a heavily themed or theatrical Halloween event. It is an opportunity to experience the Battery and its history in a rather different setting.

The tour will last approximately 60–90 minutes.

Booking essential

This is a one-off evening event and places are limited. Our daytime Steynewood tours have sold out this year, and last year’s evening event also sold out, so advance booking is strongly recommended to guarantee your place.
