Battle of Britain: 85 Years On – The Island’s Story

Welcome to Restore the Story CIC’s commemorative exhibition marking the 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. This pivotal moment in 1940 shaped the course of the Second World War—and left a lasting imprint on communities across the UK, including right here on the Isle of Wight.

This exhibition explores how our island—so close to the front lines of the conflict—endured air raids, witnessed dogfights overhead, and played a vital role in Britain’s defence. One of the most significant local events was the bombing of the RAF radar station at Ventnor, a key part of the chain of early warning defences that helped protect the nation. Though damaged, the site was quickly repaired, a testament to the determination and ingenuity of those who served.

Through personal stories, local artefacts, and rarely seen photographs, we invite you to discover the courage, resilience, and spirit of the Isle of Wight during one of our nation’s darkest—and most defining—chapters.
