Needles New Battery Guided Tour

Needles New Battery Guided Tour

Step into one of the Isle of Wight’s most extraordinary historic landscapes on this guided tour of the Needles New Battery, led by Steve and Jo from Restore The Story CIC.

Built in the late 19th century as part of Britain’s modernised coastal defence network, the New Battery was designed to protect the western approaches to the Solent. Set high above the dramatic chalk cliffs of Alum Bay, the site once housed powerful artillery and military infrastructure aimed at safeguarding Britain from potential invasion.

During the Cold War, however, the New Battery took on an entirely new and secretive role. It became a centre for rocket and missile testing, playing a key part in Britain’s early space and weapons programmes. Experiments carried out here contributed to the development of pioneering rockets such as Black Knight and Black Arrow, placing this remote clifftop site at the heart of Britain’s journey into the space age.

On this tour, you will uncover the fascinating transformation of the New Battery from Victorian fortress to cutting-edge Cold War research facility. You’ll explore areas normally closed to the public, including underground magazines and control rooms, and learn how scientists, engineers and military personnel worked in secrecy against the backdrop of one of the island’s most spectacular coastal views.

Along the way, your guides will bring the site to life with stories of innovation, tension, and everyday life at this unusual military outpost. From gun emplacements to rocket testing, the New Battery reveals a remarkable chapter in both local and national history.

Tours are delivered independently by Restore The Story CIC and operate alongside the historic Needles Battery sites managed by the National Trust.

With sweeping views across Alum Bay, the Needles Rocks and towards Dorset, this tour combines dramatic scenery with a powerful story of defence, science and secrecy. It offers a unique opportunity to experience a site that helped shape Britain’s coastal protection and early space ambitions, guided by passionate historians who specialise in uncovering the island’s hidden past.
