For the past two years, Jo and Steve have had the privilege of delivering guided tours at the historic Needles Batteries as volunteers. During that time, we have met thousands of visitors, shared the remarkable stories of the site, and helped bring to life the dramatic history of this extraordinary coastal defence position overlooking the western approaches to the Solent.
Those two years have been invaluable. They have allowed us to deepen our research, refine our storytelling, and truly understand what visitors want to experience when they stand on that windswept cliff edge looking out towards the iconic stacks and lighthouse.
We are now pleased to announce that Steve and Jo will be delivering both the Needles Battery tours under Restore The Story CIC. The tours take place at the Needles Batteries sites, which are cared for by the National Trust, delivered independently by Restore The Story CIC. We are delighted to continue sharing the site’s rich and complex history through our own carefully researched and engaging interpretation, offering visitors a fresh and distinctive perspective on this remarkable coastal fortress.
Our tours will continue to explore the full story of the Old and New Batteries — from Victorian coastal defence and experimental rocketry to the lives of the soldiers, master gunners, and later military personnel who served there. As always, our approach remains rooted in careful research, authenticity, and a passion for making history accessible and memorable.
